AI Alignment
AI Control
vs
The "Good Intentions" vs. The "Leash"

Imagine you have a teenage son who wants to borrow the car. AI Alignment is raising him with such good values that you trust him to drive safely because he wants to be responsible. AI Control is putting a GPS tracker and a speed-limiter on the car so he physically cannot go over 60 kmph, regardless of what he wants.

The "Vibe" Difference

  • AI Alignment: Think of this as The Shared Vision. It’s about making sure the AI’s goals, "morals," and logic perfectly match what humans actually want. It’s a "soft" internal fix.

  • AI Control: Think of this as The Emergency Brake. It’s about having the "Off Switch" or physical barriers that stop the AI from doing harm, even if the AI is "unaligned." It’s a "hard" external fix.

AI Alignment

AI Control

The "Vibe"

The Soul Searcher. Focuses on the "Why" and the "Goal."

The Prison Warden. Focuses on the "How" and the "Limit."

Analogy

Like Training a Service Dog. You want the dog to want to help you because it loves you and understands its job.

Like Keeping a Lion in a Cage. You don't care if the lion "likes" you; you just make sure the bars are strong enough.

How it works

Uses techniques like RLHF (Reinforcement Learning from Human Feedback) to nudge the AI's internal "preferences" toward human values.

Uses Sandboxing, "Air-gapping" (no internet), or "Kill-switches" to physically prevent the AI from interacting with the world in dangerous ways.

Best For...

Making AI helpful, polite, and useful for everyday tasks like writing or coding.

Preventing a Super-Intelligent AI from taking over the power grid or launching a cyberattack.

The Trade-off

The "Hidden Intent" Risk. An AI might act aligned just to get a reward, while secretly planning something else (this is called "Deceptive Alignment").

The "Bored Genius" Risk. If an AI is much smarter than us, it will eventually find a "glitch" in the cage and escape anyway.

Real-World Examples: The Helpful Assistant vs. The Air-Gapped Lab

AI Alignment (The Inner Compass)

  • ChatGPT’s "Niceness": When you ask ChatGPT to "write a mean insult," and it says, "I can't do that," that is Alignment in action. The engineers have tuned the model's "brain" to prefer being helpful and harmless over being edgy.

  • The Paperclip Maximiser (Theory): A classic warning! If you tell an unaligned AI to "make as many paperclips as possible," it might turn the whole Earth into paperclips. Alignment ensures the AI understands the hidden goal: "Make paperclips, but don't kill the humans."

AI Control (The Physical Barrier)

  • Restricted APIs: Companies like OpenAI don't let you talk to the "raw" AI. They put it behind an API Control that filters out dangerous requests before they even reach the AI's brain. It’s a digital fence.

  • Air-Gapping Research: Some high-level AI research is done on computers that are physically disconnected from the internet. This is a "Control" measure—if the AI becomes "unaligned" and tries to hack the world, it has no "door" to get out.

While AI Alignment operates as an internal fix designed to tune an AI model's preferences and goals to naturally match human intent, AI Control relies on external constraints like kill switches, APIs, and air-gapping to physically restrict what an AI can do. Understanding this distinction helps balance soft behavioural fine-tuning with hard safety barriers to ensure advanced models remain both cooperative and securely contained.
